We left Mary and Phil's land and drove to Hope. Along the way we took the Kalifornysky Road to the old Libby Cannery and the historic Kenai Landing. It is now a shop, hotel and event venue with many of the buildings restored. We did some grocery shopping at Walmart and Fred Meyers in Soldotna. Around Quartz Creek we passed Mary, Phil and Jake going to Homer to spend the weekend with friends. We got a campsite at Porcupine Forest Service Campground and sat outside awhile. An amanita muscaria mushroom was growing under our picnic table. These are hallucinogenic and somewhat toxic -- we left it alone. The camp host came around to tell us of black bears in the campground. One of them had torn down his wood for sale sign. He didn't think there would be a problem since the campground was full with people. He said the berries were getting ripe and that was what the bears were in camp for. I picked raspberries with Jim on the lookout. We are in site 19 and the bears walked through again just behind site 17. The people there made a lot of banging noise and they went away. After supper Jim and I went to the Sea View Bar and Cafe in Hope and had a beer and listened to a good bluegrass band named The Wellstrung Project.
