We drove the McCarthy Road today to McCarthy-Kennecott. This road is made on the old railroad bed that was used to haul copper ore out of the copper mine at Kennecott. We were told to watch for old railroad spikes coming up through the dirt. We saw a bald eagle sitting on a tree limb in the middle of the Copper River near out the fish wheels. We saw lots of rabbits today and a moose and a grizzly walking down the middle of the road. We went over the Kuskulana River bridge built in 1910. In prior years this was the most exciting part of the McCarthy Road because boards were missing on the bridge and you could see through. It's 515 feet long and 238' above the river. Along the road people had made "inukshuk" cairns out of rocks. I added one of my own. We got to McCarthy and there is a foot bridge over the river and you can walk to Kennecott or take a shuttle. It's five miles so we took the shuttle. We walked around the old mining town and then to the Root Glacier.
